Indian State legislative assemblies

The State Legislative Assembly or Vidhan Sabha is a legislative body in the states and union territories of India. A state legislature that has one house – State Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) – is a unicameral legislature. A state legislature that has two houses – the State Legislative assembly and State Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) – is a bicameral legislature.

The Vidhan Sabha is the lower house and corresponds to the Lok Sabha while the Vidhan Parishad is the upper house and corresponds to the Rajya Sabha of the Parliament of India. Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh have bicameral legislatures, with the remaining states having a unicameral one. 

Each Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is directly elected to serve 5-year terms by single-member constituencies. State Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) has 60 to 500 members.  In 28 states and 3 union territories, it is the legislative body that governs the state. 5 Union territories are governed directly by the Union Government of India and have no legislative body.  State-wise list of Vidhan Sabha & their strengths

22 states and 3 union territories have unicameral state legislature, Vidhan Sabha is the sole legislative body and in 6 states it is the lower house of their bicameral state legislatures with the upper house being State Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad). 5 Union territories are governed directly by the Union Government of India and have no legislative body.

State legislative councils of India | Vidhan Parishad

The State Legislative Council, or Vidhan Parishad is the upper house in those 6 states of India that have a bicameral state legislature. As on July 2021, 6 out of 28 states have a State Legislative Council. These are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. Member od Vidhan Parishad is known as Member Legislative Council (MLC),
