Thane city is located in the Maharashtra state of India & the taluka of Thane District. Its governed by Municipal Corporation which comes under Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With a Population Close to 2 million, Thane city is the 15th most populated city in India.
Thane City Population – Historic figures
The first census took place in the year 1881 and the population of Thane at the time was 14,456. The Thane Municipal Corporation was established on 1st October 1982. It had a population of 7,90,000 as per the 1990 Census. The population has reached to about 14,00,000 (14 Lakhs) in the year 2001.

Thane, Kalyan, Murabd, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Bhiwandi & Shahapur are tehsils of the Thane District ( earlier Vasai Virar & Mira Bhaynder are also part of thane district )
Thane district is on the North of the Konkan division. According to census 2011, Its the most populated district of India. ( Later in 2014 it got burficated split into two districts). As per the provisional data of the 2011 census, Thane District had a population of 11,060,148 out of which the male population was 5,865,078 and the female population was 5,195,070. Literacy rate is 84.53% & sex ration (females per 1000) is 886.
In August 2014 the district was split into two with the creation of a new Palghar district, leaving the reduced Thane district with a 2011 Census population of 8,070,032. Now it’s third in the state of Maharashtra in terms of population. Major cities in the district are Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Badlapur, Murbad, and Shahapur.
