Pune District is located in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is the most populous district in Maharashtra and the third-most populous district in India. Historically associated with the Maratha Empire, Pune is widely regarded as the cultural capital of Maharashtra due to its rich heritage, educational institutions, and intellectual legacy. Often referred to as the “Oxford of the East,” the district is home to numerous prestigious universities and research centers. In recent decades, Pune has also emerged as a major IT and industrial hub, hosting several global technology companies. Despite rapid urbanization, the district maintains a natural landscape of hills, valleys, rivers, and forested areas.
As per the provisional reports of Census India 2011, the population of Pune District was 9,429,408 (94.29 lakh), making it the largest district in the state by population.

Sub Divisons of Pune district
The District is divided into 5 Subdivisions for administrative convenience. A Subdivision is headed by Sub Divisional Officer SDO/SDM) in the rank of Assistant Collector in Cadre of I.A.S or a Deputy Collector.
Each division consists of a few Taluks. The Five Sub Divisions in Pune District are Baramati, Bhor, Pune, Shirur, and Maval.
