Rourkela is a city in Odisha, India. It is the third-largest Urban Agglomeration in Odisha & situated about 328 kilometers north of the state capital Bhubaneswar. The city is also popularly known as Ispat Nagar and also as the Steel City of Odisha.
The Rourkela Township is divided into two separate townships under the Census of India as Raurkela Steel Township and Rourkela Town. The Residential quarter’s colony of Rourkela Steel Plant is called Steel Township and the other part is called Civil Township. One smaller township Fertiliser was renamed sector-22, as this township is within the purview of SAIL.
According to the census report of 2011, Rourkela has a population of 483,038 (Rourkela Industrial Township is 273,217 and Rourkela Town is 210,412) and the urban metropolitan area population is 536,450.

As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of R0urkela Town in 2011 is 273,217 (2.73 Lakhs) of which the male population is 144,949 and the female population is 128,268
The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that the density of Raurkela Town for 2011 is 6504 people per sq. km. Raurkela Town city administrative area is 102 sq. km & it’s administrated by Raurkela Municipal Corporation.
The average literacy rate of Rourkela Town in 2011 was 87.95 %. If things are looked out at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 92.37 % and 82.94%. respectively. Total literate in Rourkela Town was 214,744 of which 119,761 are males while 94,983 are females.
With regards to the Sex Ratio in Rourkela Town, it stood at 899 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is 885 girls per 1000 boys

Raurkela Industrial Township Population
The Rourkela Township is divided into two separate townships Steel Township and Civil Township.
Rourkela has got one of the largest steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is situated here named Rourkela Steel Plant. So, that the city is also popularly known as Ispat Nagar. The Steel Township and Fertilizer Township are under the Steel Plant Administration while the other sections of the city are under the Raurkela Municipal Corporation.
As per census 2011, Raurkela Industrial Township population is 210,412 (2.10 Lakhs) of which 109,823 are males and 100,589 are females. The literacy rate is 86.60 % & the Male-Female Sex ratio is 916. The child sex ratio is 886.
