The initial provisional data released by Census India 2011, shows that the density of Dhanbad for 2011 is 4200 people per sq. km. Dhanbad city administers area of 275 sq. km. and metro area is 577 sq. km.


The average literacy rate of Dhanbad City in 2011 was  79.47%. If things are looked at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 86.14% and 71.96%. respectively. Total literate in Dhanbad city was 8,05,982 of which 4,62,420 are males while 3,43,562 are females.


With regards to the Sex Ratio in Dhanbad, it stood at 891 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is 903 girls per 1000 boys.
