Top Indian States by Jute Production

Jute, a robust and versatile natural fiber, holds a significant position in the global market, standing second only to cotton in terms of cultivation and utilization. Its prominence is particularly notable in India, where it takes center stage as the world’s largest producer of jute, closely trailed by Bangladesh.

The cultivation of jute is strategically concentrated in specific regions within India, contributing significantly to the country’s overall production. States like West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Andhra Pradesh play pivotal roles in fostering the growth of this valuable fiber. The favorable climatic conditions and soil characteristics in these regions make them ideal for jute cultivation.

Despite its historical significance, the jute industry in India has witnessed fluctuations in production over the years. From the fiscal year 2004-05, where the production stood at an impressive 10,272 thousand bales, there has been a noticeable decline. The latest available data for the fiscal year 2023-24 indicates a decrease to 9,693 thousand bales, reflecting the evolving dynamics of the jute industry in India.
