Tirunelveli also known as Nellai is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s the sixth-largest city in Tamilnadu after Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, and Salem. It’s an ancient city, and is more than 2,000 years old. & has a number of historical monuments, the Swami Nellaiappar Temple being the most prominent.

As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of Tirunelveli City in 2011 is 4,73,637 (4.73 Lakhs) of which the male population is 2,33,659 and the female population is 2,39,978


The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that the density of Tirunelveli for 2011 is 4370 person per sq. km. Tirunelveli city administers an area is 190 sq. km.


The average literacy rate of Tirunelveli City in 2011 was 90.39%. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy was 94.75% and 86.18% respectively. Total literate in Tirunelveli city was 385,976 of which 198,745 are males while 187,231 are females.

Tirunelveli District Population

Tirunelveli district is one of the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu state in India. Tirunelveli District was formed in the year 1790 by the East India Company, later came under the direct control of the British Crown Queen Victoria. The name Tirunelveli has been composed of the three Tamil words i.e. ‘Thiru – Nel – Veli’ meaning Sacred Paddy Hedge. It is the largest district in terms of area with Tirunelveli as its headquarters.

According to the 2011 Census, the district’s population was 3,077,233 (30.77 Lakhs) with male population of 15,20,912 & female population 15,56,321 respectively. The average literacy rate is 82.50%. The Male-female sex ration is 1023 & Child sex ratio is 960.
