Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. It is the twelfth-largest country in Europe and the sixth-most populous member state of the European Union. According to the National Institute of Statistics, as of January 1, 2025, Romania’s usually resident population was 19,036,031 (19.03 million), representing a decrease of 31.5 thousand people compared with January 1, 2024.

Urban residents (51.3%) and women (51.4%) remain the majority, although both groups also recorded slight declines. In 2024, net international migration was positive (+58,800), with more men immigrating (58.3%) and more men emigrating (57.6%). However, despite the positive migration balance, it was not sufficient to offset the large negative natural increase, making Romania’s population continue to decline

Religion in Romania

Christianity is the majority religion in Romania 94% of the population identifies themselves as Christians. Romania has the world’s third-largest Eastern Orthodox population.

At the country’s 2011 census, 81.0% of respondents identified as Orthodox Christians belonging to the Romanian Orthodox Church.
