Bhopal is the capital city of the State of Madhya Pradesh in India. Also known as the City of Lakes, It’s one of the greenest cities in India & the second most populated city in Madhya Pradesh. As per Census 2011, Bhopal is the 16th largest populated city in India. As per the provisional data of the 2011 census, Bhopal had a population of 17,98,218 (17.98 Lakh) and Bhopal’s urban/metropolitan population is 18,86,100.

As per Census 2011, Bhopal has a population growth rate of 23.30% during 2001-2011.  It’s expected to have a population growth rate of 14% during 2011-2021.

At the start of the 20th century, the Bhopal population was under one lakh and it don’t show any major growth until the Independence of India.  After the formation of Madhya Pradesh and Bhopal as its capital population saw a steady growth & reached 1 million in 1991 & 2 million in 2021.

Census 2011 Details

As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of Bhopal City in 2011 was 17,98,218 (17.98 Lakhs) of which the male population is 9,36,168 and the female population is 8,62,050. 


The initial provisional data released by Census India 2011, shows that the density of Bhopal is 3887 people per sq. km. Bhopal city administers an area of 236 sq. km & its UA is 336 sq. km


The average literacy rate of Bhopal City in 2011 was 83.47%. If things are looked at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 87.45% and 79.16% respectively. Total literate in Bhopal city was 13,20,675 of which 7,20,207 are males while 6,00,468 are females.


With regards to the Sex Ratio in Bhopal, it stood at 921 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is 919 girls per 1000 boys


In census enumeration, data regarding children under 0-6 age were also collected. There were a total of 2,16,088 children under the age of 0-6 years. Of the total 1,12,602 are boys while 1,03,486 are girls. Child Sex Ratio as per the census 2011 was 919. In 2011, Children under 0-6 formed 12.02 % of the total population of Bhopal City
