As per Census 2011, Kochi has a population growth rate of -8.59% during 2001-2011.  The negative growth rate is due to the reduction of the Kochi Municipal Corp. area from 133 sq. km to 95 sq. km.  It’s expected to have a population growth rate of 10% during 2011-2021.

As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of  Kochi City in 2011 is 6,02,046  (6.02 Lakhs) of which the male population is 2,96,949 and the female population is 3,05,097


The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that the density of Kochi for 2011 is 7100 people per sq. km. Kochi city administers area is 94.88 sq. km


The average literacy rate of Kochi City in 2011 was  97.36%. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy was 98.25% and 95.51 % respectively. Total literate in Kochi city was 532,492 of which 264,067 are males while 268,425 are females.


With regards to the Sex Ratio in Kochi, it stood at 1027 per 1000 male. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is  956 girls per 1000 boys


In census enumeration, data regarding child under 0-6 age were also collected. There were a total of  55,138  children under the age of 0-6 years. Of total 28,185 are boys while 26,953  are girls. The Kochi metropolitan area or urban agglomeration is a metropolitan area centered around the city of Kochi. With a population of more than 2.1 million within an area of 440 km², it is the largest and most populous metropolitan area in Kerala.
