Hindu Population in India 2026 (Updated)

At the 2011 census, out of the 1.21 billion population, little over 966 million (79.80%) have declared themselves as followers of the Hindu religion. Hinduism is professed by the majority of the population in India.

More than nine in ten of the world’s Hindus live in India, and roughly 94% of them live in India. The largest Hindu populations outside of India are in Nepal – the only other country in the world with a Hindu majority – and Bangladesh. 

In 2026, approximately 113 crore people followed Hinduism in India. The Hindus are most numerous in 29 States/UTs except in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Jammu & Kashmir, and Punjab.
