Serbia, officially the Republic of Serbia, is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe. According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, the estimated population in 2024 was 6,586,476, based on the 2022 Census and data on natural change and internal migration. Of the total population, 51.4% were women (3,382,745) and 48.6% were men (3,203,731).

Serbia continues to experience a long-term population decline due to a negative natural increase and ongoing emigration. The country is also facing rapid demographic ageing, with 22.3% of people aged 65 and above and an average age of 43.9 years

Religion in Serbia

According to the 2022 Census, 86.6% of Serbia’s population follows Christianity, with the majority being Orthodox Christians (81.1%). Catholicism represents 3.9%, while 0.8% follow Protestantism, and 0.9% belong to other Christian denominations. The Islamic population accounts for 4.2%, making it the second-largest religious group.

A small fraction follows Judaism (0.01%), Eastern religions (0.02%), or other faiths. Additionally, 2.5% of the population chose not to declare their religion, while 1.1% identified as atheists, and 0.1% as agnostics.
