Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe and ranks among the mid-sized European nations by area and population. According to the National Statistical Committee, the population of Belarus on January 1, 2025, was 9,109,280. Of this, 78.9% (7.18 million) lived in urban areas and 21.1% (1.93 million) in rural regions.

Minsk remains the largest city with 1.99 million people. Other major population centers include the Minsk Region (1.46M), Gomel (1.33M), Brest (1.30M), Vitebsk (1.07M), Grodno (984K) and Mogilev (971K).

Women form 53.9% of the population, while men account for 46.1%, reflecting a continued demographic imbalance. The average age in Belarus is 41.9 years, highlighting an ageing population.

Religion in Belarus

Christianity is the main religion in Belarus, with Eastern Orthodoxy being the largest denomination.  83.30% of the Belarusians are Orthodox Christians,  6.70% are Catholic Christians (either Roman Catholic or Belarusian Greek Catholic), and 1% are members of other Christians.

Other religions are in very few numbers and only make up 0.20% of the population. About 7.80% of the population are irreligious (atheists and agnostics). Some surveys put the irreligious population at a much higher percentage.
