Shimoga, officially known as Shivamogga, is a city in the central part of the state of Karnataka, India. The city is 569 m above sea level and is located 267 km from the state capital Bangalore and 195 km from the port city of Mangalore. As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of  Shimoga City in 2011 was 322,428 (3.22 Lakhs) and the Estimated Population of Shimoga in 2023 is 4 lakh.

As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of Shimoga City in 2011 was 322,428 (3.22 Lakhs) of which the male population was 161,978 and the female population was 160,450.


The initial provisional data released by Census India 2011, shows that the density of Shimoga for 2011 is 4600 people per sq. km. Shimoga city administers area is 70 sq. km


The average literacy rate of Shimoga City in 2011 was 88.02%. If things are looked at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 91.32% and 84.70%. respectively. The total literate in Shimoga city was 255,971 of which 133,191 were males while 122,780 were females.


With regards to the Sex Ratio in Shimoga, it stood at 991 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is 961 girls per 1000 boys
