Karnal is a city in the state of Haryana, India. It was part of the National Capital Region (NCR) and at a distance of 131 Km from Delhi. The city of Karnal, said to have been founded by Raja Karna, of Mahabharata fame, sprang into prominence in 1739 when Nadir Shah defeated Muhammad Shah at Karnal. As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of Karnal City in 2011 was 2,86,827 (2.87 Lakh)

LITERACY RATE
The average literacy rate of Karnal City in 2011 was 84.60 %. If things are looked at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 88.89 % and 79.88 % respectively. The total literate in Karnal city was 215,199 of which 118,533 are males while 96,666 are females.
SEX RATIO
