Bangladeshi in United Kingdom 2022

Bangladesh has the 4th largest diaspora in the world, with 13 million people living or settled outside Bangladesh.  As per the UN report on the International migrant stock, Bangladesh was one of the leading countries of origin of international migrants, with 7,401,763 Bangladeshi persons living abroad.

The United Kingdom has the largest Bangladeshi Diaspora in Europe, with most originating from the Sylhet region. The largest concentration lives in east London boroughs, such as Tower Hamlets. The 2011 UK Census recorded nearly half-a-million residents of Bangladeshi ethnicity.

British Bangladeshis

In the 2011 Census, 451,529 UK residents specified their ethnicity as Bangladeshi, forming 0.7% of the total population. As per Estimates, the Bangladeshi population in the UK in 2022 is estimated around 600,00 (o.6 million).

Based on the 2011 census, 52% of Bangladeshis were British-born, while 48% were born outside of the UK of which 212,000 were born in Bangladesh. The UK is also the third single largest export destination for Bangladesh and Britain has the largest Bengali population outside of Bangladesh and West Bengal.

The majority of British Bangladeshis originate from several administrative sub-districts of one of the four districts in the Sylhet Division. Most originate from the Sylhet District thanas of Balaganj, Beanibazar, Bishwanath, Fenchuganj, and Golapganj.  Outside Sylhet District which has the highest numbers of origin include Jagannathpur of Sunamganj District, Moulvibazar, and Nabiganj of Habiganj District.

Regions with significant populations

Greater London, West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and Bedfordshire have significant Bangladesi populations. About half live in London, with a heavy concentration in Tower Hamlets borough of East London.  Other Cities with good numbers are Birmingham (32,532),  Oldham ( 16,310), and Luton (13,606).
