Belagavi, formerly known as Belgaum, is a major city in northwestern Karnataka near the Maharashtra and Goa borders. It is an important center for administration, trade, education, and defense services in the region.
The city was selected under the Smart Cities Mission, and in November 2014, its official name was changed from Belgaum to Belagavi by the Karnataka government. As per Census 2011, Belagavi had a population of 4.88 lakh. With steady urban growth and infrastructure development, the city’s population has continued to increase.
