Turkmenistan, also known as Turkmenia, officially the Republic of Turkmenistan, is a country in Central Asia. Turkmenistan is one of the most sparsely populated nations in Asia.

According to the census results, as of December 17, 2022, Turkmenistan’s total population was 7,057,841 or 7 million. The population distribution includes 22.9% in Mary province, 22% in Dashoguz, 20.5% in Lebap, 14.6% in Ashgabat, 12.5% in Ahal, and 7.5% in Balkan province.  As per the UN World Population Prospects report, the estimated population of  Turkmenistan in 2026 is 7,043,698 (7 million.)

Religion in Turkmenistan

Islam is The majority religion in Turkmenistan and its practiced by 93.7% of the population. Most are adherents of Sunni Islam, with a minority being Shia.

Christianity is the second largest religion followed by an estimated 6.1% of the population and is mostly Eastern Orthodox Church. Other religions are below 1% and include Hinduism and Baháʼí faith.

The majority of the population in Turkmenistan is made up of Turkmen people, who account for more than 85% of the country’s population. Uzbeks form the second largest group, representing 5.8% of the population, followed by Russians at 5.1%. Other groups with significant populations include Kazakhs, Azerbaijanis, and Tatars.
