Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. According to the final results of the 2024 Population and Housing Census, the country had an estimated 2,409,200 usual residents on April 8, 2024, reflecting a 13.6% decline since the 2014 census. Urban areas accounted for 46.4% (1.12 million) of the population, while 53.6% (1.29 million) lived in rural regions, making Moldova one of Europe’s most rural nations. Chișinău municipality remained the main population centre, home to 29.9% of all residents—up from 22.1% in 2014. Women represented 52.8% (1.27 million) of the population and men 47.2% (1.14 million).
Earlier estimates from January 1, 2023 placed Moldova’s population at 2,512,800, with women forming 52.7% and men 47.3%. The population decline in recent years has been driven largely by negative net migration (–43,000 in 2022) and a natural decrease (–9,200 in 2022), though the latter has improved from –16,100 in 2021.
