The History of Ahmedabad City

Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat and was once the Capital of Gujarat ( 1960 to 1970s). It’s the seventh-largest urban agglomeration in India, with a population of close to 74 lakhs. The city is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati. The city was founded in 1411 to serve as the capital of the Sultanate of Gujarat, by Sultan Ahmed Shah.  The city is also called Karnavati, a name for an older town that existed in the walled area.

Under British rule, the Ahmedabad municipality was established in 1857. it includes the two square miles of territory within the city walls and railway suburbs outside, as well as the hamlet of Saraspur. A military Cantonment was established and the city infrastructure was modernized and expanded. The cantonment is situated north of the city at a distance of 3 1/2 miles, and close by, in the Shahi Bagh is the residence of the Commissioner. It was part of the Bombay Presidency during the British rule in India.
