Indians in Portugal

India has the largest diaspora in the world and as per the Ministry of External Affairs, there are 3.5 Crores or 35 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) residing outside India.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs report, there are 103,682 (1,03 lakh) Indians residing in Portugal.

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) – 13,682

Portugal Indian population

Indians make up less than 1% of the Portugal population and the population of Indians in Portugal as of 2026 is 1.05 lakh. A majority of the Indian community hails from the former Portuguese colonies in India,i.e, Goa and Daman & Diu. Later arrivals to Portugal were mostly Goans, Gujaratis, and Malayali people from Daman and Diu, and most recently Punjabis.

The NRI population in Portugal are ex-pats from India and number around 12000 – 15000. Indian Expats have recently immigrated especially information technology professionals.

As of 2025, there were an estimated 90,000 people of Indian origin living in Portugal, concentrated in Lisbon and Porto. They are also found in the Algarve, Coimbra, Guarda, Leiria, Odemira, and Rio Maior.
