Indian Population in New Zealand 2021

India has the largest diaspora in the world & as per the Ministry of External Affairs, there are 3.2 Crores or 32 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) residing outside India.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs report, there are 240,000 (2.40 Lakhs) Indians residing in New Zealand. Out of which around

  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) – 160,000 (1.6Lakhs)
  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) – 80,000 (80 thousand)

Indian New Zealanders Population 2021

Indians make around 5% of the New Zealand population & approx population of Indians in New Zealand in 2021 is 2.50 Lakhs.  As per the Census of 2018, Total Indian Population in New Zealand is 239,193 ( 2.39 Lakhs). In terms of population distribution, 64.7% of Indian New Zealanders lived in the Auckland region, 26.3% lived in the North Island outside the Auckland region, and 9.0% lived in the South Island.  Some of the provinces/cities where Indians are in large numbers are

  • Auckland – 105,900
  • Wellington – 15,000
  • Waikato – 9,900
  • Bay of Plenty – 6,200
  • Canterbury – 6,100
  • Manawatū-Whanganui –  2,900
  • Hawke’s Bay – 2,100

Religion of Indian population in New Zealand

Indians in New Zealand have diverse religious backgrounds & represented mainly by Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, and Christians. Most early New Zealand Indians were of Punjabi or Gujarati descent. The religion of the Indian population in New Zealand is as follows

  • Hindus – 46.6% 
  • Sikhs – 21.4% 
  • Christians -16% 
  • Islam – 8.7%
  • Others – 8.1%
